President: Pua Cooper
Pua Cooper is a highly experienced nurse with over 26 years of leadership and clinical experience. She holds a Master’s of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a specialty in Nursing Informatics. She currently serves as Chief Clinical Information Officer for Boca Raton Regional Hospital where she is responsible for the operations of the Informatics department of this 400-bed academic facility. In this capacity, she uses her understanding of clinical practice to leverage technology to improve patient outcomes. In 2014, her team was recognized as one of eight national finalists in McKesson’s Distinguished Achievement Award for the innovative use of technology to advance care. In 2015, she was formally recognized as a Senior HIMSS Member. At the national HIMSS level, she participates in the Nursing Informatics Executive Work Group and the Clinical Insights Editorial Committee where she has authored several articles for the publication. She has been a speaker at various local and national conferences including: HIMSS 2016, South Florida Organization of Nursing Executives (SFONE), Healthcare Financial Management Association (HMFA), and the Nursing Consortium of South Florida.
Past President: Elizabeth Rockowitz
Elizabeth Rockowitz is a Healthcare Executive that brings 20 years of healthcare IT experience in providing comprehensive information technology knowledge for innovative solutions that meet business, research, teaching and clinical objectives. She is accomplished in system project development, instructional design, revenue cycle optimization, performance improvement processes, application system development and leading multi-discipline teams. Prior to joining FIU, Liz worked for large academic medical centers to develop their healthcare academic and information technology solutions. Liz has served on several professional organizations' executive boards and has been a frequent speaker at numerous local and national conferences. Liz holds a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master of Science in Computer Information Systems and Instructional Design. Ms. Rockowitz has earned numerous awards: CIO Magazine, 2007, "The Team Builder Stand Out Award Winner " CIO Magazine, 2007, "Ones to Watch Award" Computerworld, 2007, " The Computerworld Honors Program" - Healthcare Laureate.
President-Elect: Oscar Perez
Oscar Perez is the Vice President of Information Technology for the Memorial Healthcare System in South Florida. Memorial is a six hospital system that includes the Joe DiMaggio’s Children’s Hospital, serving southern Broward County, Florida. Mr. Perez has been in healthcare IT for over 21 years. He’s a visionary and transformational leader that believes in putting people and culture first while advancing technology to enhance patient care and taking healthcare to the next level. He’s worked at various healthcare systems is South Florida including academic medical centers like the University of Miami Healthcare System and large public healthcare systems like Jackson Memorial. In addition, he’s consulted at many large healthcare systems throughout the country like Emory in Atlanta, MD Anderson in Houston, and many more. His well-rounded Healthcare IT experience has allowed him to make an impact wherever he’s been.
Mr. Perez currently lives with his family in Miami, Florida where he received a Bachelors’ in Management Information Systems (MIS) from FIU and a Masters’ in Healthcare Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Miami. He also serves on the board for South Florida HIMSS and is a member of CHIME.
President Emeritus: Karen Ondo
Karen Ondo has 30+ years healthcare experience ranging from VP/CIO of a multi-entity IDN (49 sites), vendor and now Executive Vice President, KLAS Enterprises, a market research and intelligence firm specializing in healthcare IT performance monitoring. FHIMSS, HIMSS Board of Directors; national/international speaker.
Treasurer: Jorge Rey
Jorge Rey is the Director of Information Security and Compliance at Kaufman, Rossin & Co., one of the largest independent accounting firms in Florida and one of the top CPA firms in the country. Recognized by the South Florida Business Journal as one of top professionals under the age of 40, he is responsible for managing and performing a variety of information security assessments, SOC /SysTrust reports for companies in the financial services, healthcare, and technology industries. He is a frequent lecturer and has been quoted or featured in many major publications including CIO, ComplianceWeek, The Miami Herald, ComputerWorld, Healthcare Fraud, and others.
Jorge helps organizations ranging from startups to large public and privately held companies address information security, compliance and IT needs. He brings notable experience in security audits, HIPAA/HITECH compliance, technology, vendor management and cloud computing to his clients. He serves on the South Florida HIMSS board and is past Chairman of the ARMA Palm Beach Treasure coast. Jorge is a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), Certified Information Security Manager (CISM), and Certified in the Governance of Enterprise IT (CGEIT). He holds a master's degree in Information Technology from Nova Southeastern University and a certificate in Administration of Information Security, recognized by the National Security Agency (NSA).
Member at Large: Jim McKeen
Jim McKeen is a Director of Healthcare Solutions for AAJ Technologies, a full-service systems integrator that helps healthcare payer and provider organizations capitalize on the latest technologies to streamline operations, reduce costs, improve customer / patient care, and — ultimately — boost competitive advantage. Jim has serving on the South Florida HIMSS Chapter for the past 10 years.
Program Chair: Janine Pratt
Pratt is a high energy team oriented Healthcare Information Technology professional with 19 years of experience providing strong leadership implementing enterprise information technology systems. Expertise identifying resources required to build cross functional multi-specialty project teams providing solutions which meet business and clinical objectives while establishing strong vendor relationships. Accomplished track record of successfully delivering on time and on budget enterprise projects.
Communication: Kelly Jackson
Kelly is a seasoned healthcare leader with more than 13 years of healthcare experience. She currently serves as the IT Change Management and Communications Manager for Jackson Health System. In her role, she provides change leadership for key IT initiatives including IT system implementations and continuous improvement efforts. She partners closely with IT and key business groups to ensure organizational readiness for new ways of working and to ensure successful outcomes. Kelly also serves as an internal consultant and coach to leadership. She has an undergraduate degree from Illinois State University, a master’s in public health from Florida International University and currently holds an active nursing license in the state of Florida.
Chapter Advocate: Kendall Brown
Kendall Brown, Healthcare Solutions Advisor, has more than 15 years experience in the healthcare technology industry. Her healthcare experience spans a broad range of disciplines from patient safety to Electronic Medical Record/Practice Management Systems and health insurance and pharmaceutical sectors. Her professional career has includes Sales and Marketing, Product Management, Project Management and Account Management. She enjoys closing deals, developing new business ventures, solution-selling, networking and adding input to the direction of any company she works for. Kendall’s forte is delivering “proof of concept” sales presentations to Senior-level audiences at hospital and healthcare organizations. She works well on her own, as well as in teams. Her track history includes selling, implementing and up-selling the highest revenue generating clients. Kendall works to ensure things don’t fall through the cracks, and follows up to ensure they’re done properly and on time. She’s driven to reach her goals and quota. Her selling style is authoritative and assertive and she is an expert in product knowledge. She is eager to discuss the possibilities of selling technical or specialized products. Kendall is a member and serves as a leader of many organizations such as: The Junior League of Miami, National Society Daughters of American Revolution, American Foundation of Suicide Prevention, IT Women, Women in Technology Institute, Women’s Healthcare Executive Network, Healthcare Information Management Systems Society and Healthcare Finance Management Association. Hobbies include Yoga, Stand Up Paddle boarding, and Traveling abroad (last vacation was Sydney Australia and Queenstown New Zealand).
Chapter Advocate: Erik Pupo
Erik serves as a Managing Director in the Accenture Health Client Service Group, where he works as part of the leadership within the Clinical and Health Management Services team. Erik develops and leads strategic and technological transformational initiatives for a diverse portfolio of clients in the healthcare provider, payer and life sciences industries. In this capacity, he partners with senior client executives to develop and execute strategies for IT investment decisions, strategic roadmaps and business transformation programs in support of population health, care management, value based care, and interoperability initiatives. Erik works directly with a range of clients such as Experian Health, Albany Medical Center and Aetna, and has previously worked with AHIP Institute before on numerous leadership discussions with payers on critical technology topics.
Erik has worked for over 20 years in healthcare, including senior positions in federal, state, and commercial healthcare programs and initiatives, and served in key leadership roles within the healthcare community. He holds leadership advisory positions within the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), and the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA), and regularly speaks at industry conferences on trends influencing the healthcare industry. Previously, he worked at Deloitte where he led several health IT initiatives for the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC), the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA).
After graduating from Florida Atlantic University with a Bachelors of Finance in 1997 and a Bachelors of Arts in History in 1998, he received his MBA from Lynn University in 2004. He received a certification in the Certified Professional in Healthcare Information & Management Systems (CHPIMS) in 2009 and became a HIMSS Fellow in 2012.
Membership: Patrick Hale
Patrick D. Hale is Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer of VITAS Healthcare, the nation’s leading provider of end-of-life care. Patrick oversees all aspects of large-scale IT operations and provides leadership to call centers and Telecare operations. His experience includes multiple business verticals such as healthcare, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, financial services, retail and government.
Patrick, who joined VITAS in 2013 as senior vice president and chief information officer, is part of a senior management team that has successfully steered the organization through rapid, continued growth. He was promoted to his current role in 2015.
Patrick has worked in leadership roles in the information technology field for more than 20 years. Prior to joining VITAS, he served as chief technology officer of Sparrow Health System, the premier healthcare provider in mid-Michigan for cancer, pediatrics, neurology, trauma and neonatal intensive care, which supports nearly 500,000 outpatient procedures and 100,000 emergency room visits per year. He spearheaded this large healthcare provider’s technology initiatives, including a transition to electronic medical records that took the hospital to Stage 6 of meaningful use in a single year.
Under Patrick’s IT leadership, Sparrow Health was named “Top Healthcare Industry Innovator” in the 2012 InformationWeek 500, a ranking of the most “tech savvy” companies worldwide (22nd overall 2009 and 16th overall in 2012). Earlier in his career, he served as chief technology officer for the State of Michigan where he oversaw all aspects of IT infrastructure and enterprise architecture for all 19 branch departments, provided strategic vision and operational oversight to more than 700 employees and was allotted an annual budget of $165 million.
Patrick, a noted thought-leader, is routinely invited to speak at top-tier national conferences and events. He has spoken at the Federal Government’s CIO Summit, the National Association of State CIOs, and the CIO Leadership Network, among others. Throughout his career, Patrick has received numerous awards and accolades. He is deeply involved in local and national groups working to advance healthcare through technology innovation. Patrick Co-chairs the South Florida Hospital and Healthcare Association’s HIT Committee. He is a member of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) and the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives. He was also a founding member of Project Management Institute’s mid-Michigan chapter. Patrick received a bachelor’s degree in communication arts and sciences from Michigan State University.
